Christmas Visitors

Well, Christmas is completely and totally upon us, complete with rain and insane traffic. But we got to thoroughly enjoy our pre-Christmas days with Michael & Dorothy, a couple of good friends who visited from Mississippi.

Sadie was very eager for our guests to arrive:

They made it! We enjoyed so much good food while they were here, it was amazing. Pizza, brunch, curry, gelato, etc. etc. etc. We were all completely stuffed by the time they left on Wednesday.

Greenville showed off its best side before the rain set in. Falls Park is gorgeous at all times of the year.

And then of course, we had to play a to-the-death round of Monopoly.

Thanks, M & D, for an awesome visit! Hope to see you again soon!

Love

It’s been two years. Two wonderful years of learning, growing, laughingstudying, moving, establishing home, traveling, and just having the most fun ever.

I’m so grateful for Mason and for our life together.

Well, that was a long break! Sorry about that. Lots has been going on. After Thanksgiving, our dear friend Rebecca came to hang out for a few days, and we enjoyed showing her around Greenville and introducing her to friends. Greenville is mighty lovely this time of year, and that makes it even more fun to see our city as a tourist sees it.

Speaking of tourism, last weekend we went to Austin! It was a quick trip-only 3 days or so, but we packed a ton into a short time.

Austin is such a fun town! We ate tons of delicious food (Torchy’s Tacos are to die for), went thrifting, did some record shopping, and walked around the beautiful downtown area.

It was great to see Mason’s brother Hunter, our friends Dawn & Joel, and other friends of theirs. We also got to meet up for coffee and chai with their cousin Lauren, who lives near Austin. Hurray for family!

Austin, the capital of Texas, also has the largest state capitol building of all the states. I laughed at how stereotypical that is. Clearly, you don’t need to mess with Texas.

We had a total blast in Austin. More friends are headed to town this weekend. The party continues!

Continually Thankful

Now that we’re past Thanksgiving day, it’s easy to forget how incredibly blessed I’ve been. Everything around me–advertising, window displays, even random people with their shopping bags–seems to encourage the gimme-gimme attitude all too prevalent at Christmas. But it’s actually thankfulness, not the gimmes, that refreshes and restores the soul. So I’m hoping to preserve that feeling of thanksgiving even as I enjoy the glitter of the holiday season.

The day after Thanksgiving, Mason and I eschewed the madness of Black Friday and headed to Asheville for a day away. It was terrifically lovely. We enjoyed a little shopping at indie businesses and bookstores, amazing Indian food, and a beautiful afternoon walk at the UNCA Botanical Garden.

I so enjoy this season of the year. It makes me think of falling in love, because right around this time three years ago, I fell hopelessly for a sweet guy named Mason. And the feeling hasn’t gone away.

Happy Holidays.

Adventures

image of the hobbit

When Mason and I moved to Greenville, I had to leave my book club. It was a great tragedy, and I missed it terribly. So when Mandy mentioned that she had always wanted to have a book club, well, let’s just say I was wildly enthusiastic.

We had our first meeting last night, and it was simply wonderful. We’re reading Tolkien’s The Hobbit. Several of us have read it before, and others are reading it for the first time. This makes for a great depth and variety of conversation. I can’t wait to read through it again. There’s something so wonderful about reading about hobbits, dragons, and adventures during the wintertime. It makes me want to curl up under a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate and thoroughly escape into Middle-Earth.

Smoothie Queen

Over the past year, I’ve developed a strong interest in nutrition and its correlation to lifelong health. It’s undeniable that what we put into our bodies affects everything – how we feel, our brain function, even our sense of happiness and wellbeing. So Mason and I have made some changes in our lifestyle (and grocery budget!) to allow for the most healthful eating possible.

There is evidence to suggest that eating a diet that includes a lot of raw foods, especially fruits and vegetables, gives the body optimum nutrition. But I’ll be honest. Sometimes it’s hard to eat tons and tons of raw food, especially vegetables. (The thought brings to mind a bunny with huge teeth, incessantly munching on carrots.) In thinking through all of this, I was inspired by a conversation with my friend Annie, who eats a lot of smoothies that include veggies. And I was convinced.

After incorporating fruit/veggie smoothies into my daily diet, I feel amazing. I know my body is getting adequate nutrition, and it doesn’t feel like a chore to eat my vegetables.

Most fruit, many vegetables, and some dairy products work perfectly well in a smoothie. Here’s a list of some of the ingredients I’ve used, in various combinations.

Apples
Berries
Pears
Bananas
Avocados
Carrots
Spinach
Watercress
Kale
Yogurt
Local Honey
Milk

And the final product is completely delicious.

Thankful Reflections

image of downtown Greenville

I can’t believe it’s November already. Anyone else think the year is literally zooming by? The season of sweaters and chai lattes and year-end planning has me reflecting with great thankfulness on this past year. It’s been a year of change. We moved, transitioned into new jobs, discovered incredible community, and generally find ourselves in a completely different life compared to a year ago. And I am deeply grateful.

The other day my brother-in-law asked me “What is your favorite thing about Greenville?” I had to think for a moment before I realized that Greenville offers the life that I want. No place is absolutely perfect, but the beauty, culture, and community here are unique and inspiring. In one sense, it is the perfect place, for us, for now.

I’m thankful that this is our path. We are so, so blessed.

New Work, New Website

image of Sean & Kate

Several weeks ago, I did a photo shoot with Sean and Kate Gaffney, a terrific couple here in the Greenville area. We investigated some new locations where I hadn’t taken photos before, we had a blast, and the shots turned out amazingly well.

All this photography I’ve been doing recently has led me to establish a new website exclusively for my photos. I’ll definitely still blog here at Chai Thoughts, but there will be more photography to be found here:

http://katiestewartphotos.com

And you can fan me on Facebook here.

I can safely say I’ve completely caught the photography bug. I would love to do more photo shoots, and I’d love it even more if this grew into a business. So if you’re in the Greenville, SC area or nearby, I’d really like to take your picture. Check out my new website and email me (click on “Contact”) if you’re interested. It’s almost time for Christmas cards!

Out-of-Towners

image of latte art

We’ve had a fun and unusual couple of weeks, welcoming friends and enjoying our city in a new way. Last weekend, Mason and I had a dear friend visit us for several days, and this weekend Mason’s grandparents were here in town. It’s been wonderful to spend time with friends and family whom we haven’t seen in a while.

It’s a different feeling seeing your city when you have visitors alongside you. Though I love everyday living here in Greenville, it’s great to show off the best aspects of the city when people are here to play the tourist. We love to share our favorite restaurants, coffee shops, and parks with friends and family. And such times only make me love this place more.
